I like to test interesting and convenient fire starting methods in my fireplace at home.  This is one of my favorites fire starters-- a magnesium bar.

With your pocket knife, shave off some magnesium until there is a pile of dust and shavings about the size of a quarter, put it on or near your tinder, and then strike the flint rod on the side with your pocket to make sparks that ignite the pile.  It's a light weight, long lasting fire starter that easily fits into camping gear and survival kits.  Here is a good demo video.  Happy camping!  ~Brian
