Camping out in a cartop tent seems to be the latest outdoor craze... or is that a 4-door craze? Rimshot! If you've got an SUV, this looks like a fun, comfy option & it can have a lot of features. I really like the hanging storage on the side of the car, and the awning extension.
Although tent-toppers are cool & liberating, one flaw I thought of right when I first learned about them is that once you camp, you are stuck there. You can't drive away until you fold it up again. Some crafty people have gotten around this by modifying TRAILERS to support the tentage. This couple uses a decommissioned army trailer that I think might have been around when I was a private.
I can see the advantages of rooftop tents. Sleeping on lumpy ground is a pain, even worse when water comes rushing in or soaks through the bottom. Be aware though, when you add items to your vehicle's roof, you raise the center of gravity. Be careful on turns. This longer vid explains that, plus shows that rooftop tents have been around 75 years! Wow!
